DETECTORS SAVE LIVES
A simple device can make anyone's home safer.
According to experts, over 2,200 people die in the U.S. each year from
fires in their homes. About 1,100 of these people are children. Many of these
fires happen at night when people are asleep. Most of these people die because
they do not have working smoke detectors. A smoke detector makes a loud noise
when there is a fire. That way, people can get out of the house in time.
A home should have at least one smoke detector on each floor.
Don't put it near the kitchen. The best place to put a smoke detector is near
the bedrooms. If the bedrooms are far apart, put a smoke detector near each
bedroom. If anyone has hearing problems, get a special smoke detector that
makes a bright light.
You should test your smoke detector once a month. Follow the
instructions. Usually, you test a smoke detector by pressing a button on the
detector. If the alarm sounds, the smoke detector is working. On other
detectors, you look for a small light or you shine a flashlight on the
detector. You should change the battery in your smoke detectors twice a year. A
good time to change the battery is when you change your clocks in the spring
and fall for daylight saving time. After you change the battery, test the detector
to make sure it works. You should replace a smoke detector when it's ten years
old. If you don't know the age of your smoke detector, you should get a new
one.
A fire can move very quickly. So if your smoke detector goes off,
it's important to get outside as soon as you know there is a fire. For this
reason, everyone should know what to do in a fire, especially children. Tell
children that in a fire they should go outside right away and then call 9-1-1.
Don't stop to get things. Just make sure that everyone gets outside as quickly
as possible.

ADS ARE EVERYWHERE
A. Would you believe that the average person sees
nearly 3,000 ads every day? That seems unbelievable, but advertising has become
so common that ads are almost everywhere we look. Also, most advertisements
today don't look like normal advertising. Newspapers and television are no
longer the only way for companies to reach customers. Today, advertisers are
more quiet and clever in their selling.
B. Take a look: your clothes may have a brand name or
logo on them. Many brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton show their logo clearly
on their clothes and bags. Branding is also very important for big sports
companies and professional sports teams. For example, Nike has spent hundreds
of millions of dollars creating and promoting their famous "swoosh"
logo.
C. Your favorite forms of entertainment are also
filled with ads. Companies seek to sponsor concerts and TV shows: for example,
the Coca-Cola Company sponsored American Idol, one of the most
popular shows on American television, since its first season. Similarly, many
sports tournaments happen without money from sponsors, who want their ads
clearly visible in stadiums. In movies, you'll see characters driving a
particular brand of car, or eating a popular snack, because companies pay for
their products to be there. In the James Bond film Casino Royale,
car manufacturer Ford paid about $22 million for James Bond to drive one of its
cars - for only three minutes!
D. The problem for advertisers is that people have learned
to ignore traditional advertising, such as TV ads and billboards. Advertisers
must find new ways to get the public to notice them - and continue noticing
them. The key word now is "engagement": companies are trying
to create deeper, more interactive experiences, like games, parties, or charity
runs, and connect these experiences to their brand.
E. Companies have started using the Internet to reach a
wider audience. For example, brand websites can be accessed by anyone,
anywhere. Advertisers are using social networking sites like Facebook to post
videos and entertaining stories that feature the company's products. Their goal
is for people to share these posts with their friends, and eventually reach
millions of people. The energy drink company Red Bull has been very successful
in creating online content that viewers respond to. By sponsoring and making
short films focused on extreme sports like skateboarding and surfing, Red Bull
has attracted more than hundreds of millions of views on its YouTube
channel.
F. Advertisers are finding new and different ways to catch
our attention. As a result, ads are getting more creative. Instead of telling
us what is so special about a product, advertisers are making products part of
our lives.
